Was Iblis an angel created from light, who then transformed into fire after his disbelief and refusal to prostrate to Adam?

Scholars have differed regarding whether Iblis was one of the angels. The preponderant view is that he was not, and the following are adduced as evidence:

1. Allah's saying: "Except Iblis, he was of the jinn." 2. Allah's saying: "Will you then take him and his offspring as protectors instead of Me?" For the angels have no offspring. 3. Iblis was created from smokeless fire, whereas the angels were created from light, and light is not fire.
