There is no specific duration for remaining in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity). Rather, ghusl (ritual bath) is obligatory for performing prayers and acts of worship that require purity. It is recommended to hasten ghusl so that a Muslim remains in a state of purity, and because angels do not approach a person in a state of janabah unless he performs wudu (ablution). A person in a state of janabah is not impure in a physical sense, nor do things he touches become impure. It is permissible for him to touch various objects, as has been established in the noble Prophetic Sunnah.
