Linguistically, "mahr" refers to the dowry (sadaq). Legally, it is the wealth pledged to the fiancée to gain ownership of her marital bond. Jurists agree that there is no maximum limit for it, but they differ concerning its minimum limit. The Hanafis and Malikis estimate it by the amount for which a thief's hand would be amputated, whereas the Shafi'is and Hanbalis hold that there is no minimum limit for it. The conditions for the dowry are purity, usability, ability to deliver, and clarity of knowledge. It is permissible to pay it all in advance, or defer it all, or divide it into installments.
