What is the ruling on stopping glorification (tasbih) and remembrance (dhikr) due to interruption? Is it permissible to glorify (tasbih) while listening to lectures or the Quran? Is seeking forgiveness (istighfar) considered part of remembrance (dhikr) and glorification (tasbih)? And what is the authenticity of performing the following adhkar: "100 times 'La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir,'" and "100 times 'Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi,'" and "100 times each for 'Subhanallah,' 'Alhamdulillah,' 'Allahu Akbar,' and 'La ilaha illallah'" before sunset and sunrise?
We thank the questioner for his eagerness to remember Allah. There is no harm in interrupting dhikr (remembrance of Allah) to speak with one's wife or for similar reasons. Tasbeeh (glorification of Allah) when watching a religious program or listening to a lecture is permissible, provided it is done in a low voice that does not cause disturbance. When listening to the Quran, it is better to listen attentively and stop tasbeeh, as Allah Almighty says: "And when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." (Quran 7:204). Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) is a form of dhikr, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged it. It is preferable to give each occasion its due form of remembrance. So, istighfar at dawn is better if combining it with tasbeeh is difficult. All the mentioned forms of dhikr are legislated.
