What is the relationship between Salafism and extremism, and why do extremist groups specifically affiliate themselves with Salafism?
The misunderstanding of religion and the application of extremism by extremists do not invalidate the religion itself, nor are they attributed to the people of truth; rather, they invalidate the poor understanding and the worse application. The error of some who affiliate themselves with Islam or Salafism is magnified by media spotlight, while the media overlooks the more heinous actions of their opponents, such as atheist states that have caused the death of millions. The enemies of Islam play a role in fueling deviant ideology and distorting the image. The affiliation of some intellectually deviant individuals with Salafism or Islam does not benefit them in any way. This becomes clear by asking for the opinion of Salafi scholars regarding them, as they openly condemn and disavow these actions and ideas. Salafis and all other Sunnis have condemned the ideology of the Khawarij, some of whose groups declare Salafis to be disbelievers and kill them. Salafism is a noble, authentic, scholarly methodology, not a state or a group. To know the true nature of the religion of Islam, a Muslim should turn to the Holy Quran with contemplation and understanding, for it is Allah’s strong rope and His straight path.
