What is required after a husband says to his wife: "You are divorced once"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a man says to his wife, "You are divorced," one divorce (talaq) is counted. This divorce is revocable (raj'i) if it was not preceded by another divorce. The wife must remain in the marital home until her 'iddah (waiting period) ends, and it is not permissible for the husband to expel her, due to Allah's saying: "Do not expel them from their homes, nor should they leave, unless they commit a flagrant indecency." The husband must also provide for her until the 'iddah ends. A wife who is revocably divorced is still considered a wife; her husband may enjoy her company, she may adorn herself for him, and he may take her back either verbally or by action (sexual intercourse) as long as she is within her 'iddah.
