Is it wrong for the questioner to call his stepfather, who raised him from childhood, "my father" and treat him as a father? And is this considered adoption? A father has a great right over his son, even if he is disobedient or unjust. The proof of this is the Almighty's saying: (But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness). A parent is honored after their death by supplicating for them for mercy and forgiveness, giving charity on their behalf, executing their will, maintaining ties of kinship related to them, and honoring their friends. It is permissible to address the stepfather with the term "father" as a form of honor and respect. It is also commendable to give charity on his behalf and perform Hajj for him after his death as a form of gratitude, while emphasizing that honoring one's biological parents carries a greater reward.
