What is the ruling on a man's ablution while naked or wearing short trousers that do not cover his knees, knowing that his 'awrah is from the navel to the knee?

Ablution is valid when the 'awrah (private parts) are uncovered and short shorts are worn, but it is forbidden to expose the 'awrah in the presence of anyone other than one's wife or bondswoman.
