Divorce in exchange for exoneration (al-ibra') is a type of khul'. The woman who undergoes khul' (al-mukhtali'a) observes the 'iddah (waiting period) of a divorced woman, and this is the opinion of the majority of jurists. Her 'iddah is three menstrual cycles for those who menstruate, three months for those who have reached menopause or have not yet menstruated, and delivery of the baby for a pregnant woman. The woman who undergoes khul' is not obligated to observe her 'iddah in her husband's house; rather, she observes it wherever she wishes. However, she must not travel or spend the night outside her home. It is permissible for the woman who underwent khul' to return to her husband with a new contract without the condition that her 'iddah has expired.
