Is what I did — inviting for the purpose of engagement and offering a gift to express feelings and pave the way for the proposal — considered a mistake and forbidden (haram), even though my intention was good?

If the girl is pleasing in terms of religion and character, he may propose to her; otherwise, he should seek someone else. Offering a gift to a non-mahram girl is permissible with conditions, and a man inviting a woman for food is acceptable, provided there is no khalwa (unlawful privacy), forbidden gazing, or forbidden mixing.
