Why was Quba Mosque named by this name?
Quba' is the name of a well, and the village of Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf became known by it. The mosque was named Masjid Quba' because the Prophet (peace be upon him) built it in the dwellings of Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf when he passed by them on his way to Medina. Many hadiths have been narrated concerning its virtues, and concerning its people, Allah Almighty revealed the verse: (A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves) [Al-Tawbah: 108].
