Is seeking forgiveness required after concluding all prayers, whether obligatory or supererogatory?

Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) after the prescribed prayers is established from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The view of the majority of scholars is that this specific Istighfar is for the obligatory prayers. However, there is a general Istighfar that is legislated after all acts of worship, which is seeking forgiveness for any shortcomings in performing the act of worship. Allah Almighty commanded it after departing from Muzdalifah in Hajj, and after performing the night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl). The Sunnah also indicates its legitimacy after ablution (Wudu) and after gatherings of remembrance (Dhikr). Istighfar is legislated after acts of obedience due to any shortcomings that may occur on the part of the servant in their performance.
