Is it permissible to give zakat to university students who live far from their families (knowing that their families are well-off)?

Zakat is only to be given to the eight categories mentioned in Surat At-Tawbah. If the university student is poor, or in debt, or a wayfarer, then it is permissible to give him zakat. Some scholars have held the view that it is permissible to give zakat to a student of knowledge who is unable to combine seeking knowledge with earning a living.
