Is it permissible to harbor a single intention for the continuous days of making up the Ramadan fast?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

"Forming the intention [of fasting] at night is a condition for every obligatory fast, according to the preponderant view of scholars, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'Whoever does not form the intention to fast before Fajr, there is no fast for him.'

The majority of jurists hold that an intention is required for each day. However, the Malikis are of the view that a single intention suffices for an obligatory fast that requires consecutive days, such as Ramadan. As for a fast that does not require consecutive days, such as making up missed fasts (qada'), a separate intention is necessary for each day.

Therefore, for making up missed Ramadan fasts, forming the intention at night for each day is necessary according to the general body of scholars. If one merely has it in their heart that they will fast tomorrow, then the intention has been formed."
