Is it permissible to refrain from shaking hands with non-mahram women, such as paternal aunts' daughters and maternal aunts' daughters, taking into consideration what some exegetes have said regarding the permissibility of touching or shaking hands if it is not done with lustful intent?

Shaking hands with a young woman who is not a mahram is absolutely forbidden. Some scholars have permitted shaking hands with an elderly woman who is no longer desired. If the prohibition of shaking hands with a woman who is not a mahram is established, then one must comply and not follow the customs of people that contradict the Sharia. Adherence to the Sharia teaches people their religion, and the pleasure or displeasure of people should not be the concern of a believer. Rather, their concern should be to attain the pleasure of Allah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever seeks Allah's pleasure by displeasing people, Allah will suffice him against the burden of people. And whoever seeks people's pleasure by displeasing Allah, Allah will entrust him to people." Righteous youth are advised to help each other remain steadfast, and it is incumbent upon scholars, callers to Islam, and educators to create a virtuous environment that facilitates steadfastness in obedience for young people.
