What is meant by removing images from graves, and does this include graves inside the mosque, in its courtyard, or outside it? Is it permissible to pray in a mosque built in a graveyard, including supererogatory prayers, Tarawih, regular Sunnah prayers, and funeral prayers?

The intent behind removing the image of a grave is to level and flatten it with the ground, which applies to old graves. As for new graves, the deceased is exhumed and removed from them, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did in his mosque.

The graves that are to be removed are those upon which a mosque was built, or which were incorporated into it or its courtyard and were within its boundaries. However, if the graves are outside the mosque and there is a separation between them, they are not removed, and prayer in the mosque is valid.

The prohibition of praying in mosques built upon graves is an absolute prohibition that includes both obligatory and supererogatory prayers. The funeral prayer is an exception, as there is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding it.
