Is Sujud Al-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) obligatory if I thought I had completed two prostrations in prayer, so I deliberately sat for the Tashahhud without reciting, then remembered it was only the first prostration, so I sought forgiveness and continued? And if the answer is yes, then where should the prostration be? And what if the opposite occurred? And what if this happened during the Tashahhud instead of the sitting of rest? And should Sujud Al-Sahw be before or after the Tasleem (salutation) in this case?

If a worshipper thinks he has performed two prostrations but then remembers he only performed one, he is not required to perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud sahv) if his doubt is dispelled and he becomes certain that he was correct, because the reason necessitating the prostration has ceased. Some scholars are of the opinion that if the worshipper performs an action while in doubt, he must perform the prostration of forgetfulness before the salām, because he performed the action while hesitating. The preferred view is that the prostration of forgetfulness is not required if the worshipper did not perform any action other than pointing with his finger, as this is a sunnah and not an obligation.
