What is the ruling on seeking to sight the crescent moon?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is recommended to sight the Ramadan crescent on the night of the 30th of Sha'ban, as a precaution for fasting and to avoid disagreement, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did. Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Count the crescent of Sha'ban for Ramadan." Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Al-Daraqutni narrated from Aisha: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was more meticulous in observing Sha'ban than any other month, then he would fast upon sighting Ramadan. If it was obscured from him, he would complete thirty days and then fast."
