How is Zakat calculated on accumulated money in two bank accounts, one in Egyptian Pounds and the other in US Dollars: Is each account calculated separately, or is the dollar value converted to Egyptian Pounds, and at what exchange rate (at the time Zakat is due or the current rate)? And does the same apply to silver and gold prices?

It is not permissible to delay the payment of Zakat beyond its due time, except for a valid excuse.

The two bank accounts may be considered as a single account and thus combined, or each account may be zakatable separately.

Method of Zakat: Ascertain the time Zakat becomes due according to the lunar months, then determine the amount of money owned (dollars or pounds). The money should be valued according to gold or silver (the latter being more beneficial for the poor). The nisab (minimum threshold) is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. The amount of Zakat is one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%). As for gold and silver, Zakat is due on their essence, not on their value. Whoever wishes to pay Zakat from them should estimate their current market value.
