Will a sheikh who has reached seventy years of age and was diligent in prayer and reciting the Qur'an be held accountable, then he was afflicted with a psychological illness that made him abandon prayer and claim to have forgotten the Qur'an and experience fear when attempting to pray?

We ask Allah to grant healing to the Sheikh and to the sick among the Muslims. If the Sheikh loses his mind, he is not held accountable for abandoning prayer, because accountability is lifted when reason departs, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The pen has been lifted from three: from the sleeper until he awakens, from the child until he reaches puberty, and from the insane person until he regains his sanity."
