How is the zakat calculated for a water bottling plant that includes machinery, vehicles, storage and bottling equipment, and cooling refrigerators, with existing installments and murabaha on the plant and vehicles, as well as salaries and other expenses?
There is no Zakat on machinery, cars, or refrigeration units, whether they are for cooling or for rent, as long as they are fixed assets for the factory and not intended for sale.
Bottles prepared for sale with water are considered trade goods. They are to be appraised at the end of the year, and 2.5% of their value is due as Zakat if they reach the nisab along with other assets. However, if the bottles are fixed and returned to the factory, there is no Zakat on them.
Workers' wages are not included in Zakat calculation.
Debt does not prevent the obligation of Zakat on visible and hidden assets if the one paying Zakat possesses enough wealth to cover the debt in addition to his essential needs.
