What is the ruling on reciting Ayat al-Kursi or other remembrances quickly in the morning or before sleep without contemplating their meanings?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Reciting the Qur'an is the best form of remembrance (dhikr), and what is required in it is contemplation and humility. This is the intended purpose, for it expands the chests and enlightens the hearts. Indeed, a group of the predecessors would spend an entire night, with one of them reciting and contemplating a single verse. The aim of remembrance is presence of heart and contemplation. What indicates the importance of contemplation is Allah's saying: "A Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its verses, and that men of understanding may take admonition." Allah has censured those who do not ponder over the Qur'an. Therefore, one must be diligent in contemplating, reflecting, and showing humility when reciting Ayatul Kursi and other verses, for reading with tranquility brings comfort to the soul. Frequent reading does not justify reading without deliberation, for a hidden meaning may become apparent after a long time.
