What is the ruling on a young man being exposed and defamed by his family before relatives due to an old sin from which he has repented, and is it permissible for him to sever ties of kinship with them?

If a person has molested his mahrams and repented, then Allah forgives the repentant, no matter how great the sin. Allah the Almighty says: "And indeed, I am the Forgiver of whoever repents, believes, does righteousness, and then is guided." And the one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. His family defaming him after his repentance is a grave evil, for concealment (of faults) is obligatory.

Allah’s wrath is unseen; only He knows it. This person has repented, and Allah has forgiven him. As for the harm caused by the family through defamation, it will not go unrewarded; there will be retribution on the Day of Judgment through good deeds and sins if they do not repent.

The person is advised to gently counsel his family and remind them of the seriousness of defamation. If they persist in defaming him, he may abandon his brothers and sisters with the intention of deterring them, unless he fears that it will increase their obstinacy. He is not permitted to abandon his father; rather, he must be gentle with him and try to appease him to influence him.

He is advised to frequently supplicate for the righteousness of his family's condition and to ask Allah for well-being to protect himself from disgrace before his wife and children.
