When is the time for the iqama of prayer after the adhan, and is it permissible to perform it after five minutes without adhering to what other mosques do?
The jurists divided people into two categories: individuals and congregations regarding performing prayers early or delaying them. It is better for an individual to perform the prayer at the beginning of its time, based on the hadith of Umm Farwah: "Prayer at its early time." As for the congregation, they delay the prayer for people to gather. There is no specific limit for the duration between the adhan and the iqamah; rather, the criterion is that the duration should be sufficient for people to prepare and gather. It was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said to Bilal: "And make between your adhan and iqamah a duration such that one who is eating finishes his meal, one who is drinking finishes his drink, and one who needs to relieve himself enters to do so, and do not stand until you see me." However, its chain of narration is weak. This is determined by the mosque's administration or the resident imam, and it depends on the gathering of the worshippers. There is no need to delay if they gather early, as delaying would cause hardship to people and delay them from their needs, and because performing the prayer at its early time is better. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he saw them gathered, would hasten, and if he saw them slow, he would delay. The imam should not delay the iqamah of the prayer to the extent that it causes hardship to people, for a Muslim is keen on congregational prayer in the mosque unless there is an excuse.
