The fasting of a menstruating woman is unanimously invalid. Therefore, if she does not experience purity before dawn, it is not permissible for her to fast. If she becomes pure during the day, she is not required to abstain from food and drink according to the Maliki and Shafi'i schools, but she must make up that day. However, according to the Hanafi and Hanbali schools, she is obligated to abstain for the remainder of the day and must also make it up. Furthermore, for a menstruating woman to form the intention to fast overnight, hoping to become pure during the day, is considered an act of extremism (tanattu') in religion.
