What is the ruling on praying behind an Imam who lies for the sake of expediency and is known to be committed to the directives of a group that dictates to him what he says in the Friday sermon without discussion, which provokes the anger of the worshippers?

Lying is a reprehensible trait and a forbidden, ugly act. It is one of the characteristics of hypocrites and a path to immorality. A Muslim is not permitted to engage in it except for a recognized legitimate benefit or to avert harm. As for the Imam, he should not be a tool in the hands of others. If what is demanded of him leads to abandoning an obligation or committing a forbidden act, then it is unlawful for him to comply. Praying behind a corrupt Imam is disliked, though the prayer is valid. However, if another Imam is available, even if he is less proficient in recitation and knowledge, he is more deserving of leading the prayer.
