What must be done after breaking a promise (is there expiation)?

The Sharia has made it obligatory to fulfill covenants, pacts, and promises, and has warned against breaking promises, considering it one of the characteristics of hypocrisy.

Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to break his promise except for a legitimate excuse. Whoever breaks a promise without a legitimate excuse must repent and seek forgiveness.
