What are the forms of forbidden backbiting (Gheebah)? Does it include describing a building where someone works as old and not beautiful, or indirectly blaming someone for a problem that occurred, or mentioning a problem without details, or describing someone as obese when asked about them in comparison to another? What is the ruling on indirectly disapproving of heard backbiting?

Backbiting is to mention a Muslim with what he dislikes to be mentioned with, whether it pertains to his body, religion, worldly affairs, character, wealth, or anything else related to him, be it through speech, writing, or gesture. Its criterion is anything by which you make another understand a defect in a Muslim.

Examples of it include: talking about someone's work in an old building, or describing someone as fatter than another, or blaming him for a statement or action, if that is intended to disparage, or if the person mentioned dislikes it.

However, if it is not intended to disparage, or if the person mentioned does not dislike it, it is not considered backbiting.

Thoughts that are not uttered aloud are not considered backbiting.

Whoever hears backbiting must denounce it. If he is unable, then he must denounce it in his heart and leave the gathering if possible. If he is compelled to stay, he must occupy himself with the remembrance of Allah or thinking about another matter to avoid listening. If he can then leave the gathering, leaving becomes obligatory upon him.
