Is the intention, by saying, "I intend to purify myself from major ritual impurity," obligatory when purifying oneself from menstruation?

"Niyyah" (intention) is the aim and determination to perform something, and its place is the heart. Whoever intends to perform something for which intention is a prerequisite must intend in their heart what they wish to do, such as intending to remove minor ritual impurity for ablution (wudu'), or major ritual impurity for ritual bathing (ghusl). One should not utter it verbally. Jurists have differed regarding the ruling on verbally articulating the intention. The Hanafis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis held that it is sunnah (recommended), while some Hanafis and Hanbalis considered it disliked (makrooh). The Malikis stated that verbal articulation is permissible, but it is preferable to refrain from it, except for someone afflicted with obsessive doubts (waswas), for whom it is recommended to articulate it verbally.
