Is it permissible to sell a gift?

The common saying, "A gift is neither gifted nor sold," is incorrect and contrary to Islamic law. Whoever lawfully possesses a gift has the right to dispose of it through sale, lease, gifting, or endowment. The Sunnah of the Prophet demonstrates this, including: the Prophet's gifting of what was given to him to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the permissibility of selling a gift as in the hadith of Umar and his robe, and the recipient's right to dispose of his gift as he wishes, as in the hadith of Bakr ibn Umar.
