Is it permissible for us to initiate the greeting of "peace" (Salam) in a language other than Arabic to a disbeliever?

Scholars have differed on the ruling of initiating salaam (greetings of peace) with non-believers. Some have forbidden it, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Do not initiate salaam with Jews or Christians." Others have permitted it, citing Allah's Almighty words regarding Ibrahim to his father: "Peace be upon you," and His Almighty words: "So overlook them and say, 'Peace.'" The best is to say to them: "Peace be upon whoever follows guidance." As for greetings of peace in a language other than Arabic, it is permissible for those who are able to speak Arabic, and if it is permissible for a Muslim, then it is even more so for a non-believer.
