Is it forbidden to sit cross-legged during the Friday sermon?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A hadith from Mu'adh ibn Anas states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "forbade al-hubwa on Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon." Al-ihtiba' (al-hubwa) is sitting on the buttocks with the thighs and shins drawn towards the abdomen, held by the arms. Scholars have differed regarding this hadith; some declared it hasan (good), while others declared it da'if (weak) due to weakness in its chain of narration. Most scholars, including the four Imams, held the view that al-ihtiba' on Friday during the sermon is not disliked, as it has been authentically reported that some Companions, such as Ibn Umar and Anas, used to do it. Some scholars mentioned that the reason for the prohibition, if the hadith is authentic, is the fear of falling asleep or uncovering the 'awrah (private parts). If these concerns are absent, then there is no harm in al-ihtiba'. In conclusion, it is preferable to avoid al-ihtiba' during the sermon, but if a person does it and it does not lead to the uncovering of the 'awrah or falling asleep, then there is no harm in that.
