What is the jurisprudence of the hadith: "When one of you wakes from his sleep, he should not dip his hand into the vessel [of water]..."? Is it obligatory to wash the hands three times or twice upon waking? Does dipping apply to using a faucet? Is dipping a Sunnah or an obligation? And does the hadith only include sleep at night, or any sleep?

The jurisprudence of the hadith was previously mentioned in Fatwa no. 50328. Dipping (the hand) is prohibited, not commanded. The intention is to wash the hand before inserting it into the vessel, whether with a faucet or otherwise. Hanbali scholars restricted the washing to those who wake up from night sleep, based on the hadith: "for he does not know where his hand spent the night." Whereas the majority of scholars stated that washing is recommended after every sleep, whether at night or during the day, and this opinion is more preferable.
