The answer

The duration of the deceased's stay in their graves is a matter of divine decree (tawqifi), and no text has been revealed concerning it except His (Allah's) saying: "He will say, 'How many years did you remain on earth?' They will say, 'We remained a day or part of a day,'" and His saying: "You remained not but a little, if only you knew." Al-Qurtubi mentioned that they forgot the duration of their stay in the graves due to the intensity of the torment, or they considered the period short compared to what they were facing, or in relation to their endless stay in Hellfire.
