Is suicide permissible out of fear of Allah's punishment?

Suicide must be avoided, for it is a disease and a calamity, a path to painful torment and misery in this world and the hereafter. Allah Almighty says: "And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful." It is reported in the hadith (definition) that the one who commits suicide will be tormented with what he killed himself with in the fire of Hell, abiding therein eternally. It is advised to repel suicidal thoughts, to increase supplication and sincerely seek refuge in Allah, not to despair, to believe in divine decree and destiny, to occupy one's time with what benefits one in religion and worldly life, to keep company with righteous women, and to confide in trustworthy individuals.
