The question

Is not the affirmation by the People of the Sunnah (Ahl al-Sunnah) that Allah has two eyes, based on the verses: "sailing under Our eyes" (54:14), "for verily you are in Our eyes" (52:48), and "and that you might be made under My eye" (20:39), a form of anthropomorphism (tashbeeh) of Allah with His creation, especially since the use of singular and plural can indicate the dual in the case of human beings?

The answer

The Sunni mainstream (Ahl al- wal-Jama'ah) are in agreement that Allah Almighty has two real eyes, befitting His majesty and greatness. Their evidence for this is from the Qur'an and Sunnah; such as His saying, exalted be He: "and that you be صنع to My eye" (20:39) and "flowing before Our eyes" (54:14), and the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning the Dajjal: "It is not hidden from you that Allah is not one-eyed." And the narration of placing the thumb on the ear and the finger next to it on the eye when reciting "All-Hearing, All-Seeing," and his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "Indeed, our Lord is All-Hearing, All-Seeing," and he pointed to his eyes. There is no contradiction between the mention of the eye in the singular, plural, or dual form in the texts; because the singular definite noun (mufarrad mudaf) denotes generality, and the plural may denote the dual or be intended for magnification. All of this confirms the necessity of believing that Allah has two eyes, and they do not resemble the eyes of creation; due to His saying, exalted be He: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing" (42:11).
