What is the Islamic ruling on a husband who does not adhere to agreements and promises made with his wife and children? And are marital agreements considered promises?

Fulfilling a promise is a characteristic of believers, while breaking it without a valid excuse is a characteristic of hypocrites. However, if the one who made the promise intended to fulfill it but was then prevented by something, he is excused. If the promise was made with the intention of not fulfilling it, then it is a lie and a breach. But if it was made with the intention of fulfilling it, and then an impediment arose, it does not fall under the characteristic of hypocrisy. It is permissible for a man to promise his wife something that is not obligatory for him, with the intention of fostering affection and comforting her, and there is no sin upon him for that, as stated in the hadith (definition) of Umm Kulthum bint Uqba in Sahih (definition) Muslim. Spouses should have good assumptions of each other and seek excuses. The husband should be keen to fulfill his promises, especially with his children, to instill trust in them.
