What is the ruling in Islamic Sharia on naming a child "Sarmad"?

Linguistically, "sarmad" (سرمد) means eternal and continuous, as in the Almighty's saying: (Say, "Have you considered: if Allah were to make perpetual for you the night until the Day of Resurrection...") This word denotes relative perpetuity, similar to the name "Khalid." It is permissible to be named "Sarmad" as an act of optimism for a long life and relative permanence. However, it is better to choose virtuous names such as Abdullah, Abdur-Rahman, Muhammad, and Saleh.
