Feeding leftover food to animals is not considered wasteful and is permissible in Islamic law due to the great reward it entails. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "For every wet liver (living creature), there is a reward." Indeed, a prostitute was forgiven because she gave water to a dog that was almost killed by thirst.
