Is it permissible to draw faces with oil for printing, not for hanging, and what is the ruling on non-three-dimensional cartoon images found in the home, and what is meant by "unless it is a pattern on a garment"?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
It is not permissible to draw or sculpt animate beings, whether by oil painting, engraving, or as a three-dimensional or flat image. As for the exception, "except for a design on a garment," jurists have differed in its interpretation. Some have said that it includes images of inanimate objects, such as trees, while others have stated that this exception was before the general prohibition of imagery. Furthermore, the Shafi'is consider it forbidden if the head remains, even if the rest of the body is severed.
