The answer

Images on cups and similar items fall into two categories:

The first category: The image is a photographic one that has then been copied onto the cups. The preponderant opinion is that this is permissible, provided it is free from any other reason for prohibition, such as being an image of an immodestly dressed woman.

The second category: The image is a drawn one that has then been copied. This drawing and copying are forbidden and impermissible. As for using the item on which the drawn image has been placed, there is a detailed ruling: - If the image is on something that is customarily treated with disrespect (such as a bedspread, a pillow, or a cup), then its use is not forbidden. - If it is on something not customarily treated with disrespect (hung on walls, or for decoration, or worn as clothing), then it is not permissible to keep it, and the image must be removed or the item destroyed.

Ibn Qudamah stated that images of animals on items that are stepped on or leaned against are permissible. However, images on curtains, walls, and similar items must be removed or their heads cut off if possible.

Ibn Hajar al-Haytami clarified that drawing images of animate beings is absolutely forbidden, whether it is made for something that is treated with disrespect or otherwise. An image hung on a wall or worn as clothing is forbidden. However, an image on something treated with disrespect, like a rug or a pillow, is not forbidden, but it does prevent the entry of angels of mercy. There is a consensus among scholars on the obligation to alter anything that casts a shadow (i.e., a sculpted image).
