What is the ruling on pictures stored on a computer that were taken before knowing about the prohibition of photography, and is it permissible to take video or still photographs and save them on a computer without printing them, and what is the ruling on taking pictures with scholars and celebrities for the purpose of remembrance?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
The possession of photographic images of living beings is a matter of dispute among scholars, and the preponderant opinion is that it is prohibited. This is because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, informed us that angels do not enter a house in which there is a picture. This indicates the prohibition of possessing pictures in homes. A Muslim should get rid of pictures that are not needed. As for photographing women without necessity or photographing the 'awrah (private parts) of unveiled women, it is not permissible under any circumstances.
