The answer

Contemporary scholars have differed concerning the ruling on human vocal effects that are manipulated to resemble musical sounds, and we have favored the opinion of their prohibition. As for melodic embellishment (tatrib) and vocalization (tarannum) using the human voice in accordance with musical scales, it is not free from detestability (karaha), and refraining from it is better as a preventative measure (saddan li al-dhari'ah), because Abu Bakr denounced excessive vocal modulation (tan'im) and deviating chanted poetry from its original purpose towards melodic embellishment with tunes.
