The answer

Whoever dies in the way of Allah is hoped to be a martyr in terms of reward and recompense, but the rulings of a martyr in battle do not apply to him. Thus, he is washed, shrouded, and prayed over like other deceased individuals.

It is a condition for attaining the reward of martyrdom that one be a Muslim and fight so that the word of Allah is supreme.
