Is it permissible to recite the morning and evening adhkar in the plural form to generalize the benefit?

The prescribed devotional remembrances (adhkar) should not have their formulations changed, because the wordings of these remembrances are divinely ordained (tawqifiyyah) and possess specific characteristics and secrets. Therefore, it is obligatory to preserve the exact wording in which they were reported, as the reward may be linked to those specific letters.

However, if the purpose of the remembrances is seeking refuge (ta'awwudh) and supplication (du'a), then it is permissible to change them according to the circumstances of the supplicant and the one for whom the supplication is made, such as supplicating for the deceased in the funeral prayer.

An example of this is the Prophet’s — peace and blessings be upon him — seeking refuge for Al-Hasan (definition) and Al-Husayn: "I seek refuge for you both with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every venomous creature, and from every evil eye." Another example is what Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah ruled for a woman who asked him about the remembrance: "O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your servant." He advised her to say: "O Allah, I am Your female servant, the daughter of Your servant, the son of Your female servant." This is more appropriate and better, even though her saying "Your servant, the son of Your servant" has a linguistic justification in Arabic.
