Is it true that the monotheists among Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah will not abide eternally in Hell, even if they enter it, and even if they commit major sins and abandon obligatory duties, despite the existence of religious texts indicating that those who commit such acts will abide eternally in Hell, such as the intentional killer of a believer and the one who abandons prayer?

Whoever dies upon monotheism, certain of it and not having committed its nullifiers, is among the people of Paradise. He may enter Hellfire due to his sins, but his ultimate destination will be Paradise. This is indicated by texts from the Qur'an and Sunnah (definition), and the consensus of the Salaf, such as Allah's saying: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills," and the hadith (definition): "Whoever dies from my Ummah, not associating anything with Allah, will enter Paradise, even if he committed adultery and even if he stole." As for the one who abandons prayer, scholars have differed concerning him; some hold that he exits the fold of Islam, while others believe his disbelief is lesser disbelief. And Allah's saying regarding the killer of a soul: "His recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally," is interpreted to mean a long duration or other such interpretations.
