It is authentically reported in the that a man fought fiercely in the way of Allah, and the Companions thought he was one of the people of Paradise. However, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said he was one of the people of Hellfire. Then the man was wounded and killed himself. The Companion then informed the Prophet of what had happened, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, a man may do the deeds of the people of Paradise, as it appears to people, while he is one of the people of Hellfire. And indeed, a man may do the deeds of the people of Hellfire, as it appears to people, while he is one of the people of Paradise."
This Hadith confirms that it is not permissible to definitively declare anyone a martyr (give them the شهادة) except through revelation. It is permissible to use the term "martyrdom" in a general sense, but not for specific individuals.
