The answer

He who washes a deceased person and conceals their faults will receive a great reward, as will anyone who assists in that, such as pouring water. Al-Tabarani narrated from Abu Rafi' that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever washes a deceased person and conceals their faults, forty major sins will be forgiven for him." Ibn Hajar said: Its chain of narration is strong. Al-Hakim narrated from Abu Rafi' that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever washes a deceased person and conceals their faults, forty times will be forgiven for him. And whoever shrouds a deceased person, Allah will clothe him from the silk and brocade of Paradise. And whoever digs a grave for a deceased person and buries him therein, he will be granted reward equal to that of a dwelling until the Day of Resurrection." Al-Hakim, Al-Dhahabi, and Al-Albani authenticated it. As for merely attending the washing, there is no evidence for its reward.
