Who is the Companion Sa'id ibn Zayd, what are his virtues, and details of his death?

Sa'id ibn Zayd, cousin and brother-in-law of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, was among the earliest Muhajirun (emigrants). He embraced Islam before 'Umar. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, established brotherhood between him and Ubayy ibn Ka'b. He did not participate in the Battle of Badr because he was absent in Syria. He witnessed the siege and conquest of Damascus, whereupon Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah appointed him its governor. He is one of the ten promised Paradise, his supplications are answered, and he holds a high status with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He passed away in the year 50, 51, or 52 AH in al-'Aqiq.
