If you utter a clear divorce pronouncement, such as "You are divorced" or "I divorce you," the divorce takes effect even if you did not intend it. Seriousness and jest are treated the same in matters of divorce. However, if you use an ambiguous term (kinayah) for divorce and did not intend divorce, then no divorce occurs.
